The theme of SLS this week is a song that includes either hot, burning, fire or blazing, prompted by Jim and suggested by Nancy.
My Ashes is from my favourite Porcupine Tree album; Fear of a Blank Planet. It took me a while to really get into the band but this was the album that did it. Lead vocalist/guitarist (etc), Steven Wilson, has recorded several solo albums and his latest; The Harmony Codex is well worth a listen.
All the things that I needed
I wasted my chances
I have found myself wanting
When a mother and father
Gave me their problems
I accepted them all
Nothing ever expected
I was rejected
But I came back for more
And my ashes drift beneath the silver sky
Where a boy rides on a bike and never smiles
And my ashes fall over all the things we’ve said
On a box of photographs under the bed, the bed
I will stay in my own world
Under the covers
I will feel safe inside
A kiss that will burn me
And cure me of dreaming
I was always returning
And my ashes find a way beyond the fog
And return to save the child that I forgot
And my ashes fade among the things unseen
And a dream plays in reverse on piano keys
And my ashes drop upon a park in Wales
Never-ending clouds of rain and distant sails, distant sails
Sails

A neat sound . I have not heard them before…
I really like the sound, all floaty and dream like .
Thank you for the tip Glyn 💜

To be honest Willow most of the songs aren’t all floaty and dream like.

Porcupine Tree are actually classed as a Progressive Rock band. If you listen to other tracks from the album, you’ll agree Jim.

I’d never heard of Porcupine Tree until last Christmas when I came across a song Steven had written using AI. I followed them up and rather enjoy his quirky style. This is one such.

He’s such a talented singer/writer/guitarist/keyboard player etc!

New one for me, too. It has a kind of eerie sound and makes me wonder if he’s dead and reincarnated, or his spirit is just floating around looking down at the world and all he’s missing. Who knows! 🙂

I know what you mean. I prefer the more ‘heavier’ material by the band. The quieter stuff can sound rather doom laden.

A new one one me also. Not at all bad.

Porcupine Tree are really a modern prog rock band as you probably know. This track is one of the quieter one’s 🙂
