Song Lyric Sunday – It takes two

The theme of SLS this week is duets by two prominent performers. Once again, thanks to Jim and Nancy.

I’ve chosen the U2 hit ‘One’ which features the R&B/soul singer; Mary J. Blige. I think it sounds really good, especially with Mary’s vocals turning it into a much more soulful song.

Is it getting better
Or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you now
You got someone to blame?

You say, one love, one life
When it’s one need in the night
One love, we get to share it
Leaves you, baby, if you don’t care for it

Did I disappoint you
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without

Well, it’s too late tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We’re one, but we’re not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other
One

Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus?
To the lepers in your head

Did I ask too much? More than a lot
You gave me nothing, now it’s all I got
We’re one but we’re not the same
Well, we hurt each other then we do it again

You say love is a temple, love a higher law
Love is a temple, love the higher law
You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl
And I can’t be holdin’ on to what you got
When all you got is hurt

One love, one blood
One life, you got to do what you should
One life with each other
Sisters, brothers

One life but we’re not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other
One
One

Ooh-ooh-ooh
Oh-oh-ooh
Baby, make it, make it
Higher
Oh, higher (baby, yeah)
Higher
Higher

  1. I never heard this version before…I’ve always been a fan of the song…probably besides Sunday Bloody Sunday my favorite by them. She does a really good job with this one.

  2. Glyn, this duet seriously kicks azz. Achtung Baby may be my favorite U2 album. To hear this spin on one of its songs is a very pleasant surprise. Also not sure I’ve covered Mary Blige in my WMM yet, and if I haven’t, I will. The woman can sing!

  3. I think I prefer this to U2’s original version. Mary adds something to it that Bono alone hasn’t got. I saw U2 do an acoustic version of this in concert, with Baaba Maal doing the duet part. That worked well too.
