The theme for SLS this week is to find a song about toys. Thanks once again to Jim for the prompt.
“Mind of a Toy” is the third single by the British synth-pop group Visage, released on Polydor Records in March 1981. It was taken from the band’s eponymous debut album, following up their international hit “Fade To Grey”. It peaked at number 13 in the UK charts.
Visage were probably the only synth-pop super group?, consisting of members from Ultravox, Magazine, Blitz Kidz etc.
My mind seems to fade too fast
Clutching straws, sinking slow
Nothing lasts, nothing lasts
A puppets motions controlled by a string
By a stranger I’ve never met
A nod of the head and a pull of a thread
I can’t say no, can’t say no
When a child throws down a toy
When I was new you wanted me
Now I’m old you no longer see me
When a child throws down a toy
Spite for girl, hate for boy
When a child throws out a toy
I’m all dressed up and no where to go
On a music box that never stop
I’ll dance for if you want me to
Move in time, move in time
A wooden head and a broken heart
Used, abused and torn apart
I gave you my best and you gave me the rest
It’s time to die, time to die

Yes, Fade to Grey was their best song by far

I seem to remember this song on MTV when it started…I remember being exposed to music that I would never hear on our rock radio stations back then.

It’s what they termed ‘New Romantics’ mainly for the dress sense rather than the music!

A new one on me, but I wasn’t really into synth pop so that probably isn’t surprising!

Visage were part of the New Romantic Era

Not knowing that probably shows how little I was keeping up at that point!

This sounds vaguely familiar, Glyn, which doesn’t really say much for either my memory or the video. I think I slept through most of the pop music of that period.

There was a lot of synth-pop music around at the time Nancy. A lot of it sounded the same

I like this, and it is a new one for me, the band and the song. Works perfect for the theme! 🙂

New to me, Glyn. I remember the band as a part of a few discussions back in the day. However, never piqued my interest enough to check them out. Where do find these bands? You got a folder or something?…hehe

Well, Mangus, I have my list of close on 2,000 cd albums on the laptop. My vinyl albums and singles are all listed in three separate A/4 sized note-books 🙂
